Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial, Georgia
Gutzon Borglum, who would later carve Mount Rushmore, began the Stone Mountain carving in 1923. An active member of the Ku Klux Klan, Borglum’s work was eventually destroyed after a dispute with the Stone Mountain Confederate Monument Association, and a new carving was completed by Augustus Lukeman. Intended as a memorial to the Confederacy, the monument depicts Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.
