Gutzon Borglum, who would later carve Mount Rushmore, began the Stone Mountain carving in 1923. An active member of the Ku Klux Klan, Borglums work was eventually destroyed after a dispute with the Stone Mountain Confederate Monument Association, and a new carving was completed by Augustus Lukeman. Intended as a memorial to the Confederacy, the monument depicts Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.
