In 1963, Medgar Evers, the first NAACP field secretary in Mississippi, was gunned down in his driveway in Jackson, Mississippi. Byron De La Beckwith was tried in 1963 and 1964, with both trials ending in hung juries. He was convicted of murder in 1994.
